House Republicans eye limited fiscal cliff bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With time running short before a Dec. 31 deadline, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner will begin work on legislation that simply would extend current low income tax rates for all families with incomes below $1 million a year, according to an aide.
Negotiations will continue with the White House on a broader tax and spending deal, the Boehner aide said.
Boehner is presenting the plan to rank-and-file Republicans in a closed-door session.
On January 1, income tax increases for most Americans will begin unless Congress acts.
Last July, the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bill to extend the current low rates for all families with net incomes below $250,000 a year. The House Republican proposal, if passed by the House, would require agreement by the Senate or force a round of negotiations on a compromise between the two chambers.
In excerpts of remarks Boehner was delivering to his Republican members Tuesday morning, the speaker complained that "the White House just can't seem to bring itself to agree to a 'balanced' approach" to deficit-reduction in negotiations. At the same time, Boehner said Republicans were "leaving the door wide open for something better" than just the limited extension of current low tax rates for most Americans.
"Current law has tax rates going up on everyone January 1. The question for us is real simple: How do we stop as many of those rate hikes as possible?" Boehner said.
For months, Democrats have been urging House Republicans to pass a bill protecting middle-class taxpayers from a January 1 rate increase.

Senator Reid rejects Boehner "fiscal cliff" backup plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House Speaker John Boehner's backup plan that would simply extend low income tax rates for households with incomes below $1 million a year "cannot pass both houses of Congress," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Tuesday.
Reid, a Democrat, said Boehner instead should focus on reaching a broad deficit-reduction deal with President Barack Obama. "Now is the time to show leadership, not kick the can down the road," Reid said.
Last July, Reid's Democrats passed a bill in the Senate that would have continued low tax rates, which are set to expire on December 31, for families with net incomes below $250,000.

White House defends offer as 'good faith effort'

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is defending President Barack Obama's proposal to set a higher threshold for tax increases than what he vowed to do during his presidential campaign. The White House says Obama has moved halfway to meet House Speaker John Boehner on a "fiscal cliff" deal that raises $1.2 trillion in tax revenue, down from the $1.6 trillion Obama had initially requested.
White House spokesman Jay Carney says that offering to raise taxes on taxpayers earning more than $400,000 rather than the $200,000 he ran on demonstrates, in Carney's words, Obama's good faith effort to reach a compromise.
The new tax proposal is contained in a broader plan that Obama gave Boehner Monday that would cut spending further and lower cost-of-living increases for most Social Security beneficiaries.

Beer Prices at NBA Arenas Still Outrageous Says SaveOnBrew.com

SaveOnBrew.Com, the worlds only beer price-search engine, gathered information on beer prices at every NBA arena. The results are painful, yet predictable.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) December 19, 2012
SaveOnBrew.Com has released their 2012 - 2013 beer price findings for all 30 NBA arenas and summarized them in an infographic.
Overall, the cost of enjoying one of America's best-loved adult beverages edged upward from last season by about three percent. While the increase percentage-wise is low, when prices start at $5.00, the nickles and dimes add up quickly.
The league seems to have come back nicely after the strike-shortened 2011-2012 season and fans are being rewarded with better value for their beer-dollar this year -- with a few notable exceptions.
Both the San Antonio Spurs and the OKC Thunder both still offer five-dollar beer at their home arena. If you're passing through Denver, or lucky enough to live there, the best deal in the league is found at Pepsi center, where a 24 ounce cup of the golden nectar can be had for meager $6.25.
Those on the west coast are paying the most this season. Both the Lakers and Clippers charge $7.50, but that only gets ten short ounces at a Laker's game, and twelve while watching the Clippers. That's a whopping 75 cents per ounce to watch Kobe and the struggling Lakers put on their forty-eight minute show. Seventy-five cents per ounce translates to paying 54 dollars for a six-pack.

NBA: Road-riding LeBron waging "vendetta" against himself

MIAMI (Reuters) - LeBron James says he is engaged in a "vendetta" against himself as he pushes himself to reach his physical peak and win a second straight NBA championship with the Miami Heat.
On Tuesday, James, last season's Most Valuable Player, who spent his off-season playing in the London Olympics, was on court against the Minnesota Timberwolves for 42 minutes.
"He wasn't even breathing heavy," said Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra when asked about the longer than expected regular season minutes for his team's star.
"He's been biking so much on his own. He biked to the game the other day. He's turning the corner right now in terms of his conditioning. It's world class."
When Miami hosted the Washington Wizards on Saturday, James chose to cycle to the team's daytime shoot-around and the 45 minutes back home before doing the same in the evening for the game.
That's three hours of road cycling on a day in which he scored 23 points in a 102-72 win for Miami.
The focus and the fitness are evident on court. James will no doubt make a step up in intensity for the playoffs but he's hardly going through the motions in the regular season having made at least 20 points in each game.
"I felt great," he said after Tuesday's game, "I felt like I didn't get tired tonight. One time in the second half I felt like I could have played again if we had too. I have been biking a little more than usual.
"It is fun but it is also condition and cardio. It is something I like to do," he added.
James says he is too far "in the zone" to notice any public reaction to one of the world's leading sportsmen cycling around the streets of Miami a few hours before a game.
Perhaps even more revealing of his psyche was James's behavior after the December 6 home loss to the New York Knicks.
James left the court and went to the gym, not appearing for his post-game media duties until he had finished an evidently strenuous work-out.
It sounds an extreme approach, even for a professional athlete, but James appears to need to challenge himself, even, or perhaps especially, when he is still so dominant on court.
"I don't know. I just have a drive to continue to improve and just continue to fight through it. Yesterday (Monday) I was extremely tired but I got some more work in.
"As a leader I just want to continue to push through it. I have a personal vendetta against myself right now," he said with a grin.
Vendetta was an interesting choice of words for a man who became a hate figure for many NBA fans following his free agency move to Miami but who has silenced those voices with his outstanding displays this year.
But at 27, James is clearly concerned with not standing still in terms of his performance and his physical fitness.
"I want to get better. I want to maximize everything I can and not waste an opportunity each and every day to compete and get better as a player.
"I want to be the best, you have to push the button sometimes".

Isiah Thomas to join NBA TV as studio analyst

ATLANTA (AP) -- Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas will join NBA TV as a studio analyst.
Thomas will debut Friday and make several appearances a month. He'll also be a regular contributor to NBA.com.
The 12-time All-Star point guard led the Detroit Pistons to two NBA titles. But he's more recently remembered for his stint running the New York Knicks, who failed to win a playoff game with Thomas as coach or president. His tenure was marked by big contracts for marginal players, the acquisitions of Stephon Marbury and Eddy Curry and a sexual harassment scandal.
Thomas coached in college at Florida International for three seasons before being fired in April with a record of 26-65.

Warriors beat Hornets at home to stay hot

(Reuters) - The Golden State Warriors staved off a late fourth-quarter challenge to beat New Orleans Hornets 103-96 for a successful home return on Tuesday.
David Lee had 26 points and nine rebounds while Klay Thompson added 19 points as the Warriors triumphed in their first game at Oracle Arena since a recent seven-game road trip that saw them finish 6-1.
Despite the Golden State controlling the Hornets for most of the night, New Orleans made a furious run in the fourth to tie the game 92-92 with about four minutes remaining.
Jarrett Jack responded with six free throws during a game-deciding 9-2 stretch to help Golden State (17-8) continue their sparkling start to the season.
"We had a lot of confidence tonight, a lot more confidence than in the past," Lee told reporters after The Warriors were off to their best start since the 1991-1992 season when they started 21-8.
"It's no fun when a team's catching up on you like that, but I think we had confidence we could make plays down the stretch."
One of the younger teams in the league, few expected the Warriors to open the campaign this successfully and they are now just 1 1/2 games behind the Pacific Division lead.
The Hornets (5-19) have lost eight straight, despite getting 28 points off the bench from Ryan Anderson in their latest defeat.
Also a youthful group, New Orleans have endured a tough start and have now dropped 18 of their last 20 games.
Number one overall draft pick Anthony Davis recorded 15 points and 16 rebounds in his fifth game back since missing extensive time with a ankle injury. Greivis Vasquez added 20 and 11 assists.
Golden State grabbed a 10-point lead after the first quarter and were up 90-78 midway through the fourth before the visitors fought back by outscoring the Warriors 14-2 over a three-minute stint.
"It's just a tough loss for us, especially when you tie it up, you have a chance to win," said Hornets coach Monty Williams. "We just haven't found that closing mentality."

Dry Cleaning Mix-Up Leaves Woman with Wrong Wedding Dress

Many women love to shop, and there is one particular shopping occasion that they'll never forget -- the day they buy their wedding gown. After the wedding, some brides have their dress cleaned and preserved by a professional dry-cleaning company and put into a preservation box forever, or at least until they are ready to pass the dress to their daughter, granddaughter, or other close relative.

Kim Jones of Georgia and her daughter Emily opened the box containing what she thought was her wedding dress, 26 years after it was originally preserved. What she found inside was not her dress. It was an entirely different dress that had sleeves and was a completely different color than the dress she had worn on her wedding day. Understandably, Kim and her daughter were stunned and upset by what they found. She had hoped to pass down her dress to her daughter to wear on her wedding day. Emily told the Tennessean, "As the only girl in the family, this is the one thing that my mother had for me. She took the time to keep it and preserve it. And to find out that it wasn't hers after all these years was very disappointing."

Kim believes that the mix-up of her dress and someone else's must have taken place at the dry cleaner. The ticket number for her dress was just one digit off from the one on the dress in the box. She tried to contact White Way Cleaners in Brentwood, Tennessee, but found the store was no longer in business. Kim is still searching for her wedding gown.

If you have any information that could help Kim find her missing gown, please contact Bonnie Burch at The Tennessean who first reported the story. You can e-mail her at bburch@tennessean.com. Hopefully, our stories and word-of-mouth will help Kim locate her lost dress.
